Topic: Naming a Child (Namakaranam)
Posted by: Mythili at Tue Nov 26 16:50:42 2002
Message:

These days parents take GREAT pains to give their child a name in harmony
with the rules of astrology and numerology. They want a short name which is
not too difficult to pronounce but should sound modern. In their quest of
such names parents completely overlook their meaning. Recently I heard a
child had been named "Nirshanthika". Shanthi means peace,
tranquility. The prefix "nir" negates its meaning.
"Nirshanthika" means the one who is restless. If the parents
had considered the meaning, they would not have given the child such name.
Naming the child without considering its meaning is akin to writing a poem
of meaningless syllables according to the rules of prosody and with poetic
embellishments.
